This is an anti-suicide song. Not anti as in against, but just asking someone not to, because he isn't a lost cause and I'm not because he's not. This version was recorded in my bedroom in Chorlton, and it's funny how I can hear the room in the recording. It was speeded up significantly for the album.
Usually for me, the original recordings matter more, but in this case, the album version matters more, because Alex is singing on it, and that somehow has its own poignancy. The album track was recorded on a night when the sky was really strange, and Norwich, from a distance, looked ablaze. We could hardly believe our eyes.
The person I wrote it for continues to not be a lost cause, and I'm glad about that.
